Woohoo peeps - it's National Punctuation Day! Go on, admit it - you didn't know, did you? Or perhaps you just don't care. That's OK, too. Just consider, though, all those over-used exclamation marks in texting. You know the messages. They make you wonder if the person is yelling at you, super excited about everything, or if a thumb got stuck on the!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The lowly comma is actually very powerful. It can make in the meaning of these two sentences very different:
Let's eat, Grandpa.
Let's eat Grandpa.
I hope Grandpa can outrun his grandkids!
Or did you hear the one about the English professor who wrote the words:
“A woman without her man is nothing”
on the chalkboard and asked the students to punctuate it correctly.
All of the males in the class wrote:
“A woman, without her man, is nothing.”
All of the females in the class wrote:
“A woman: without her, man is nothing.”
Entire books have been written just about punctuation, like the bestselling, "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" by Lynn Truss. The story behind that headline is actually much different than it appears.
So why is a Professional Organizer caring about punctuation? Like I said - punctuation is powerful. Yet it doesn't have to overwhelm us. Need some easy punctuation help? P.S. I happen to love the "tilde" (~) from my days working in Business Card editing at Carlson Craft in Mankato. What's your favorite punctuation, and why?
