Not to expound on the U.S. Income Tax filing deadline coming up, but it is a HUGE pain in the neck for many of us. Not having a good paperwork system for 11.5 months out of the year and then desperately needing to find things within the non-system tends to frustrate us!
What's the solution? Right this second it is all about buckling down and powering through to find the data you need in order to file. If you need last minute help, I'm your gal - I love paperwork, and I love alleviating frustrations for others!
Moving Forward This place of paperwork madness isn't any fun. Now is the time to move forward with a plan to work in the future. You can use your filing process to set up a system that makes sense to you and won't have you scrambling next year.
Think about how you sort the data you need. Take for example the receipts necessary for reimbursement from a Health Savings Account (HSA).
Do you do it chronologically or by venue?
Do you sort by the month, by user, or by the store in which you purchased the items? Those are your clues for setting up a customized, flexible filing system. Maybe you only purchase HSA items at two stores - create files (or envelopes or bins - whatever works) for those two stores and drop receipts in them.
Tend to do more scattered shopping for HSAs? Have a monthly, or weekly file for those receipts.
Take the way your mind thinks, or searches, for papers/receipts, and set your filing up according to that. Trust me when I tell you you'll never "lose" papers again.
Can't quite visualize what those categories or files look like? Let's have a planning session - I'll bring the questions, you'll have the answers, and together we'll create a filing system that makes sense to you!
